Trains in the Rockies

One of our favourite sounds in the Mountains was the echoeing hoot of the freight trains thundering through the Rockies.
It wasn't uncommon to see up to three locos hauling several miles of trucks. 170 wagons was our record.
Sitting by the level crossing in Hope Valley I painted this orange CN train that matched the orange sunset (and squished my pennies on the track!)

The few passenger trains left in Canada come through Jasper where they make a stunning picture.
It's a good place to paint them, as they stand gleaming in the 90 year old station, waiting for the rain to run down their chrome panels.

Incidently, there's a great model shop in the station.

One of the best touristy things to do is ride the steam experience of the Spirit of Kamloops, The sunset ride across the river in the ancient restored coaches is terrific.
The staff go out of their way to make it a special occassion for all, and the holdup by bandits on horseback is brilliant!
