what does Adam think of his portrait? click here
Adam has been Cookham's lock keeper since 1993. It's a dream job too - ever since school days when a Cookham friend Paul Helmuth got him interested in weekend work at Bray lock, Adam has wanted to work on the river.
Cookham is unique on the Thames with three gates "It's good to have a spare!" Adam gets to walk up to 6 miles a day between the gates looking after 300 boats a day in peak season.
In winter he has to maintain the weir, to ease the problem of flooding. Last year when Odney Common was shut and the Benge family were cut off, they had to borrow a Land Rover to get the kids Peter and Christopher to school at Holy Trinity! "The water was running about 18" above the roadway on the common and it would easily sweep you off your feet".
Working at the lock is a perfect place to enjoy his interests in watching wildlife "we have kingfishers and woodpeckers down here, lots of rabbits and even a mink!"
Adam also helps Kim run a florists in Langley, and enjoys our local restaurants and the cinema - in particular comedy and adventure films.
