DR JOHN SOUTHGATE

It was in July 1977 that John Southgate was first referred to as the "nice young doctor" at the medical centre and 25 years later, when David Mercer retired in April, John is now senior partner at the practice.

With 8,500 patients on the register it's amazing how he remembers any names. In fact he's hopeless with names - for years he called his secretary Brian, which was hard for her to explain! and he often has to resort to describing people as "Mrs Gall bladder" when describing people to his colleagues!

But John loves being part of the Cookham community, and is determined to extend patients participation at the surgery. Away from the surgery John's interests are in bird watching and the natural world, a bit of golf and the Cookham Dean cricket club.

You'll always see him at the village dos - he played a very fetching Doc in the Snow White panto last year when they did the full monty.
