La Rochelle
La Rochelle has the most fabulous old harbour. You pass this yellow stone tower on the way out to Fort Boyard.
The Cardinal's house was built by Cardinal Richelieu - the cunning chief minister in Louis XIV's reign. He built La Rochelle into a formidable fortress and port from which to launch France's empirical ambitions. Nowadays the whole portside area is a stunning place for day trippers and tourists.
There's a large sculpture of the World through which the old city walls make a fine picture.
