Warnemunde, is the seaside resort for the port of Rostock in old East Germany. A century or so ago it was the place for the Kaiser to take his summer holidays and all Germans dreamed of holidays on the Baltic. Through the cold war, the place was full of Stasi spies and as a holiday place it fell onto hard times.

But now it's back as the in place for German holiday-at-homers and indeed the dunes and sandy beaches have a distinct appeal. I enjoyed swimming here.

I found myself thinking of the great German romantic artist Casper David Friedrich who painted scenes of the Baltic during the Napoleanic era. I think the dark Baltic waters lend the picture a certain feel....
