Television: WIDE AWAKE CLUB
This was the sister show of Wacaday and went to air every Saturday morning on TVam
It created great catch phrases like "What are we?" - "We're wide awake!" into each advert break. ![]() Some of the show's most popular features were the spelling game Bonk n Boob, true stories (well some of the time) in Hereos and Hereoines, Villains and Villainesses, and pop guests like Bros, Kirsty McColl, Sonia and Kylie.
Timmy's co presenters were Michaela Strachan, Tommy Boyd, James Baker and Arabella Warner and the show was devised by producer Nick Wilson.
There were regular pet spots with Jimmy McKee, and doc spots with Dr Pete as well a science piece by new girl Carol Vorderman.
Wide Awake Club also featured topical items of interest to the young viewers. These features allowed for national and international travel...such as Tommy's trip to Africa, Dr Pete's safari and Timmy regular travels. Viewers were also encouraged to get penpals in WAC Letter Linkers and the popular Club Call gave viewers the chance to have their own club on put on the map. More great games included general knowledge quiz George and The Bedmaking Competition with it's great jingle 'Sheet, pillow, duvet'! ![]() There was more room for acting in Ghosts, Monsters and Legends and Fables, Parables and Miracles which told lots of great stories. And there was room for lots of guests ranging from Batman Adam West to Gyles Brandreth (regularly!). ![]()
![]() Timmy and Michaela also hosted the Sunday morning spin-off WAC Extra which had more great games - like Silly Senses (smell, touch and taste while blindfolded!) and Singing in the Shower. Hundreds of kids took part in WAC and WAC Extra between 1984 and 1989 to get on telly and try and win the infamous WAC Pac!
Among the many bands to appear on WAC were Sonia, Bros, The Proclaimers, Ian Donaldson, Miami Sound Machine, Curiosity killed Cat, and here - Depeche Mode.
There were spin off books and the great WAC annuals released for 1987, 88, 89 and 90. Click on the images below to download instructions on how to make a Bonk n Boob box from the 1987 annual!
And you can find out lots of amazing facts below, care of WAC Annual 1988!
One of the features had Prince Edward making his first ever TV report with the Wide Awake Club. James Baker interviewed him about the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in Shropshire. WAC won a prestigious TRIC award and a BAFTA over the yearrs.
